Effective, homemade flea and tick repellants for dogs and cats (and your family, too)

No time to waste? GET all of the recipes here!

Hey hey,

I’m so happy you’re here. Keeping our animals (and our families) safe from ticks, fleas and mosquitoes, and the illnesses they carry (I’m looking at you, Lyme’s disease) can be simple and straightforward once you know what steps you need to take. That’s exactly what these recipes did for me and my family, animal and human. Before I run away with you (I’m known to do that, just talk and talk and talk about my passions… I’m Italian, you know?), let me tell you a little bit about me.

I’m Micol, animal lover and enthusiast, mom to Iberia, Britannia and Caledonia. I started my journey quite conventionally: I went to veterinary school and specialized in animal nutrition (I attended a specializing 6-month practicum). While attending vet school, I obtained my Osteopathy and Homeopathy diplomas, as well as a Canine and Equine Massage Therapist certification. I had to suspend my studies about a year from graduation when I moved to Germany, but I plan to go back and finish my degree. In the meantime, I want to offer all that I have learned to other pet owners.

Knowledge should be free for those who want to acquire it. I hope to serve every pet owner who’s looking for “that something more” to make their pets’ lives better… because pets are family, aren’t they?

I am excited to guide you through this journey!

Ready for it?

Let’s do this!

My basic regime

My natural tick and flea regime includes 4 recipes meant to be used together. I’ve set up an overview for you so you know what’s coming. In the next few pages you will find more information on each step as well as worksheets you can use to work through the specific amounts you will need for your cat.

Shampoo

The shampoo is the base of my pest repellant strategy. I give you 2 recipes: my usual recipe, and a heavy duty one I would use if I were to visit a high infestation area. Use is once a week, making sure to really lather up your dog and letting it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. You want to let the neem oil come in contact with your dog’s skin and let it get absorbed in.

I usually start this about 3 weeks before tick and flea season begins.

Spray

This is my daily top up (that use on us humans, too). I spray it on before going into the woods or when going outside in the evening when mosquitos are particularly feisty. For this one, too, I have 2 recipes, my usual recipe and a heavy duty one I use when I go to heavier infested areas.

Spot-on

This is my last minute protection. I used it a lotion on myself and apply it between Iberia’s shoulder blades and along her legs to repel ticks and fleas who may be trying to burrow their way into her fur.

Amber Necklace

I have been using a raw, unpolished Baltic Amber Necklace for 5 year after seeing countless dogs wearing it here in Germany. I usually put in on a few weeks before tick season begins, and leave it on till a few weeks after it’s over.

Soak

This is a bit of a bonus: I use this monthly on new plants who may have pets in the soil, to prevent eggs and larvae from developing. If the infestation has spread to the leaves, I will actually use the spray on my plants, too!
